Hello! My name is Lindsey Midrano and I am a Senior at Scotch-Plains Fanwood High School. Last year, I was presented with the amazing opportunity to serve as a member of the Overlook Medical Center Junior Board, and I now lead as Board Chair. The Junior Board fundraises money for a grant which is allocated towards a specific area of the hospital. This year, we have voted to allocate our funds to the Stacy Goldstein Breast Center at Overlook, specifically to aid in its expansion.

Timely access to breast exams and intervention is critical to the ever-growing number of patients seeking screening and diagnostic procedures. While one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, 65% of cases are diagnosed at the localized stage, leading to a 5-year survival rate of 99%.

Expansion of the Stacy Goldstein Breast Center at Overlook will provide significantly increased capacity for screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds and biopsies. Renovations are being made to waiting areas, consultation spaces, and procedure rooms; next-generation ultrasound and mammography machines are being added; and the center’s medical team is poised to play a leading role in advancing education, research, and treatment surrounding breast health.

Next year I will be majoring in biology, on the pre-med track, at Emory University. As a student planning to go into the medical field, the efforts of the Junior Board and Overlook Medical Center strengthen my passion for medicine and improving lives.

I am very excited that our grant will be allocated to The Stacy Goldstein Breast Center this year, as breast cancer impacts so many lives. Additionally, raising awareness about the importance of getting a yearly mammogram is key.
