Climbing Mt. Washington for Motivating Youth Recovery kids! · 31 May 2023

Campaign by UMass Memorial Health (RCN 043358566)
Since 1977, UMass Memorial Health - Community Healthlink (CHL) has been helping more than 22,000 adults, children, and families annually address mental health, substance use, and homelessness, with unique and unparalleled access to those in need.

Story

Motivating Youth Recovery (MYR) is the ONLY adolescent detox and stabilization program in the state of Massachusetts. We are a 12 bed dual diagnosis capable unit servicing the entire state for kids suffering from Substance Use Disorder (SUD), Mental health diagnoses and other barriers in their lives.

I started working at MYR 6 months ago after working security off and on for 9 years in the same hospital and also being an individual in long term Recovery from SUD myself. I came here with a mission, to give these kids everything they deserve in life and to show them how to help themselves and others in the process. My main motto on the unit is one I was taught at a young age "Leave it better than you found it.". We use this motto as a way to encompass giving ourselves, our peers, our families and our unit the respect they all deserve.

I'll be climbing Mt. Washington on May 30th to raise funds to complete projects held up due to lack of financing.

Since starting on the unit in late October, I've volunteered my time to make over the bedrooms and repaint them from ceiling to floor after years of being mistreated. We've sparked life into the unit with some new additions including movement therapy 3 times a week with certified fitness trainers and motivational coaches from Revive of the USA. We've been blessed to have so many members of the recovery community donate their time to come teach wonderful things like poetry and spoken word to vocalize their stories and find inner strength. Barbers and stylists volunteering to give the kids free hair cuts to make them feel physically better about themselves when they might be feeling kind of low in the situation.

Our team is dedicated, passionate and always vigilant to give these kids the best care possible, ensuring their safety and continuity after they've left. Please join our commitment to these kids who are climbing their own mountains while I climb the biggest ones I can find in the North East.

"We've got work to do, so let's get to it!"
