The Annual Giving Campaign ensures that everyone has equal access to the resources and tools they need to thrive.

Story

At the YMCA of Greater Houston, we are committed to empowering individuals to build a strong foundation for their future. Through YMCA International Services, we provide vital resettlement support to refugees as they begin new lives in the United States, offering to help them establish stability with the vital resources they need to thrive. These include individuals like our Afghan Allies. Refugees undergo strict vetting processes carried out by the Department of Homeland Security through its Citizenship and Immigration Services branch in order to receive legal status in the United States.

On January 24, the YMCA of Greater Houston received a stop work order effective immediately to disallow additional expenditures in our Reception and Placement program for refugees. The Reception and Placement program is foundational for refugee resettlement as it covers the first 90 days upon arrival, including housing, other basic needs, and social services. Due to the stop work order, we are facing critical needs to ensure the basic necessities of our clients are met. Since October 1, 2024, the YMCA of Greater Houston has received 511 refugees through the Reception and Placement program. Of these, nearly 400 have arrived within the 90-day period, with 149 arriving in January.

Without support for rent assistance, food assistance, and other support services, many refugees face the risk of eviction, food insecurity, and overwhelming financial hardship—barriers that can derail their journey toward self-sufficiency. Your generosity will ensure that refugees don’t just survive but experience an opportunity to build a stable and hopeful future.

International Services is dedicated to helping the vulnerable population the YMCA serves. This is only possible through individuals and corporations who donate generously to our cause. Please consider a gift to help us uplift these newly arrived refugees today.
