"Why I Raise for My Second Home" – Valerie's Story

I returned to the Y ten months ago, but my journey with this organization started even earlier—working in the Youth & Family department three years ago, helping children and parents feel safe, supported, and connected.

Coming back felt like coming home. The Y has always been more than a workplace for me—it’s a place where I give my time, my heart, and my energy because I truly believe in the impact we make.

I raise for my family—because I want them to grow up in a community that reflects the values we live every day at the Y: respect, responsibility, honesty, and caring.

I raise for my community—because I’ve seen what happens when people are given the support they need. Whether it’s a child needing comfort in our Kids Club while their parent focus on there fitness, a senior finding connection at our Wednesday afternoon socials, or a family receiving access to life-changing programs during a difficult time, the Y is there.

But most of all, I raise for my team—the incredible individuals who show up every day with compassion, dedication, and purpose. They are the heart of our branch. it’s not the building or the equipment that makes our Y special—it’s the people. Our staff are often the first hello in someone’s day and sometimes the only smile someone receives.

They create relationships, build trust, and offer consistent care. And through their dedication, they turn the Y from a place you go into a place you belong.

Every single one of them gives so much of themselves. That’s why I give—for the team that gives everything, and for the community that counts on us. From greeting members by name to creating moments of connection and comfort, their work matters. I’m proud to stand beside them—because they are the reason our Y feels like home.

This is more than a job—it’s a mission. And this community is worth raising for.
