Since Kiera started preschool we were on a quest to find the perfect school to support her in her educational journey. We tried several schools that ranged from non-effective to downright harmful. Finding A Step Up Academy was like a dream come true! When I look back at the social, emotional, and academic growth that Kiera has experienced at A Step Up Academy, my eyes well up with tears. The relationships we have built, the friends we have made, and the tireless dedication of the teachers and staff make ASUA a very special place.

When Kiera started at A Step up Academy there was one small class and a very large vision. Almost 10 years later ASUA is moving into a state-of-the-art educational facility for special needs children from preschool to high school. They have been working diligently to convert the old Bishop McDevitt High School in Glenside PA into a safe, fun, and engaging place of learning for all children like Kiera.

Kiera was born with a disorder called Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. TSC is a rare genetic disease that causes non-cancerous (benign) tumors to grow in the brain and several areas of the body, including the spinal cord, nerves, eyes, lung, heart, kidneys, and skin. Many kiddos with TSC suffer from epilepsy, Autism and significant developmental delays.

Everyone who knows Kiera loves her endless energy! She is happy, bubbly and funny. She loves to tell jokes, dance to Kidz Bop, sing Taylor Swift songs, read books, travel, and of course "all the good stuff".

A Step Up Academy is such a special place. It’s warm and welcoming. Staff smile and greet you in the halls. It’s a small school with a BIG vision that makes a HUGE impact.

Their vision is “preparing our students for the world and the world for our students.” The faculty and staff work tirelessly to ensure students are their best selves and that they grow and develop in some way everyday! The staff are always looking for ways to give them independence. Yet the focal point is always ensuring safety, compassion and love in a child-led educational environment.

If you haven’t heard of ASUA, it is a private licensed school serving children Preschool to Grade 12 with autism. ASUA has made a difference in the lives of so many students.
