Story
With the help of thousands of volunteers, our amazing partners, dedicated donors, and our experienced staff, ONFE provides our innovative programming to K-12 students across Ottawa, expanding our reach each year. Our programs include:
School Breakfast Program
Over 22,000 nutritious meals and snacks are served through the School Breakfast Program every school day in 204 schools across Ottawa in all four school boards.
A 10-year-old student in Year 5 has benefited significantly from the breakfast program. Before joining the program, the pupil showed signs of fatigue and irritability in class, affecting both his physical and psychological well-being. After joining the program, his energy and concentration increased, improving his overall well-being, and fostering more positive social interactions with his peers. - Teacher, Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE)
Classroom Gardens
Classroom Gardens brings indoor gardening into classrooms across Ottawa at no charge. Throughout the school year, and even through the cold winter months, these students are engaged learners – growing plants from seed and learning in a hands-on way about plant life-cycles, nutrition, and entrepreneurship.
Volunteers in Education (VIE)
VIE helps students build core skills, grasp new concepts, close learning gaps, and develop greater self-confidence. ONFE recruits, screens, and trains community volunteers to provide support during school and after-school hours in in-person and virtual formats.
“The impact (VIE volunteers) have made with (my) students is immeasurable. They often work with the neediest students who might not otherwise get the help they need to succeed. I am incredibly appreciative of our many volunteers who make a difference in the lives of our students every day.” – Teacher, Ottawa Carleton District School Board
OttawaReads
OttawaReads recruits volunteer readers from the corporate and public sectors to read aloud to children in kindergarten through grade 3 in a one-to-one setting. This helps children to develop essential literacy skills, build closer connections to their community, and appreciate that reading is fun.
JA Ottawa
As a member of JA Canada, we inspire the next generation to realize their potential and make a positive impact in their communities. JA (Junior Achievement) works with educators and volunteers to deliver the best hands-on learning experiences in the areas of financial literacy, career readiness and entrepreneurship for students in grades 5 to 12.
