Story
Women from United Way of Indian River County are proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity Women Build to highlight and address our community's critical need for housing stability. This collaborative effort underscores our shared commitment to creating a brighter future for local families, especially those most vulnerable to housing insecurity.
Women and children disproportionately bear the burden of poor living conditions, facing challenges that impact their health, safety, and overall well-being. Through this initiative, we aim to empower women to take a leading role in transforming their communities by actively participating in building safe, affordable homes for families in need.
By joining forces, we allow women to unite, advocate, and act. Together, we can make a tangible difference—helping families break free from the cycle of housing instability and build a foundation for a better tomorrow.

In 2004, Amy moved to Vero Beach in search of her birth mother. While she may have found her, she also found herself in a low season of life.
Amy decided to change careers for a fresh start. However, her new job was commission-based, and she struggled to make sales. Amy was eventually let go and she and her children ended up living in her van for a week but thankfully, they soon received assistance from local services. After exhausting those options, she and her five children slept on her grandfather's floor until finding her current rental.
The family of six now share a small apartment that still doesn’t properly address overcrowding issues.
“This whole situation has been traumatic for my children. I want stability more than anything for them,” Amy says. Now, her dream is coming true, giving her family stability and security.
