Case study: donations in action

Maya lost her brother in a car accident. His sudden death overshadowed everything. Mum spent time mourning alone and blamed herself for Kiran’s death. Reminders of him were everywhere; his pictures, football trophies.

Mum and dad couldn’t explain to Maya what happened. “We were so numb, so lost. We just didn’t have the energy to reach out to her.”

The family needed help and turned to Home-Start for support. Volunteer Jess visits the family every week. Mum says “Jess is always there to talk to. She stopped us blaming each other and helped us pull through for the sake of our daughter”.

“Jess helped us take things one step at a time. Her support meant we could start to enjoy being together again. We’ve plucked up the courage to go out again as a normal family.” Jess encouraged Mum to spend time with Maya and tackle her feeling of loneliness.

Losing a child is devastating. But thanks to help from Home-Start, the family is now getting stronger and Maya’s childhood can start again.
