In 2015, Castle Douglas Scouts visited Kenya. The chief driver was a man called Peter Chomba, a good man with a deep voice who entertained the Scouts with stories of his 25 years as a Safari Guide, and scared them by pretending to be a leopard outside their tents! Peter suffers from type 2 diabetes, and has been managing his condition since he was 19. He is also the father of 3 daughters all still in education, whom he has raised single handed since the youngest was 3 years old.

On January 6th, Peter suffered kidney failure while traveling into Nairobi on public transport to look for work. He fell into a semi coma, and as all the public hospitals were on strike, the driver and conductor of the minibus put him in a taxi to the nearest open private Hospital. Peter was examined and put on dialysis. He remained in hospital for 2 weeks and must return twice a week for dialysis. Peter had no choice but to pay for his treatment as all the Government hospitals were closed. His family and friends have all clubbed together to pay the large hospital bill. He continues to have dialysis twice a week at a cost of £48 Peters only long term option is to have a transplant at a cost of 30000 Kenyan Shillings (about£24,000).
