Story
So for those that aren’t aware, Alfie has been fighting kidney disease since he was born. Numerous issues resulted in the need for him to have a kidney transplant in August 2022 just after his 21st Birthday. At the point of Alfie’s transplant, he was relying solely on 1 kidney working at 8%, after the other had stopped working at the age of 4. Alfie was fortunate enough to receive a kidney from his mum who was a compatible match despite a rare blood type. The transplant took place on 17/08/2022 at Nottingham City Hospital. Without this kidney transplant, the only outcome would become regular dialysis to allow Alfie to extend his life.
Now 6 months on, Alfie is adjusting to life with his new kidney, now being the only one working and is on the long road to recovery. None of this would have been possible without the support of friends and family, but also the incredible work undertaken by team from the Nottingham University Hospitals Renal and Kidney Transplant Unit. The support extended to not only the transplant, but the numerous years of care and support Alfie has had with this disease and will continue to do so for the rest of his life.
Approximately 3.5 million people in the UK are living with chronic kidney disease which can ultimately result in kidney failure and can be fatal if not treated by dialysis or a kidney transplant.
Now is our opportunity to give back. Alfie along with Friends and Family will be embarking on a range of challenges over the next year to push our bodies to new limits to raise money for the Nottingham University Hospitals Renal and Kidney Transplant Unit. With the ambition of raising £5,000 to buy a range of products the kidney transplant unit require, to help as many people as possible.
The main challenge that kicked this all off was Alfie's desire to run a half marathon, which is why a group of us have decided to run the Belvoir Half Marathon on the 2nd April 2023.
We thank you and are so grateful for any support you can give and keep an eye out for a full list of challenges.
Thank you again for your continued support.
