Story
We have set up this fundraising page to raise money for a purpose built and fitted basketball wheelchair.
Charlie currently plays for the Anglesey Hawks Wheelchair Basketball Club and is also the secretary for the club. She has spent countless hours volunteering for the Hawks, which has included organising events and creating the club's website.
Charlie has complex health issues which make everyday living a constant challenge and it is testament to her grit and determination that she is such an enthusiastic member of Anglesey Hawks.
Charlie has an inherited condition called Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome, which affects the collagen fibres throughout the body. She suffers multiple painful dislocations every day. Charlie also has a Chiari Malformation, a herniation of the cerebellum (part of the brain) and this causes constant severe headaches, sensory loss, nausea and many other problems. As a result of all this and a fall which caused a bruised brainstem, Charlie, who has been confined to a wheelchair for the last thirteen years, now has rapidly deteriorating eyesight. Her sight has gone completely in her left eye and the right has very limited central vision.
In spite of all this Charlie is a very popular and positive role model for other members of the Anglesey Hawks, both players and volunteers.
Her time playing wheelchair basketball will necessarily be curtailed when she can no longer see at all, but meantime, her commitment to the game and her ability to play the game well has been recognised with an invitation to join the North Wales Knights and also to manage their Division 3 team. She does plan to train as a coach also so that she can continue her involvement with the sport for much longer.
In order to fulfil this dream, Charlie needs a sports chair, made to fit her. At present she is using a club chair, a very basic, heavy chair which does not fit her well and hampers her ability to progress.
We arw hoping to raise enough for an RGK Elite.

8 years agoMany many thanks to all of you who have contributed so far, you're all wonderful. Took Charlie to her first training session with North Wales Knights on Saturday. She loved it and worked so hard but she is really hampered by her heavy ill fitting chair. I wish you could all see what playing basketball does for Charlie, she told me once that the basketball court is the only place she feels truly alive and life makes some sort of sense. Thank you again, love you all x
