    Story

Following the devastating mudslide in a suburb of Freetown in Sierra Leone (Regent) which has claimed more than 400 lives (600 still missing); the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone has initiated a targeted emergency humanitarian support effort to a small group of affected families. CSSL want to keep their task manageable whilst making a significant impact that they can track, monitor and continue beyond the immediate tragedy. The target beneficiaries of this campaign will include single mothers, orphaned children and families who have lost a family member.

I took this photo in May of this year, it shows the area (and with arrow) before the mud/landslide and the surrounding pressures of deforestation, building, rock quarrying, 'stone breaking'...

I was able to visit Sierra Leone recently, and with CSSL, visited the site of this disaster... there are so many risks around of more, similar disasters, from Lumley Beach I could see two other mudslides up in the hills... I hope there can be some actions to prevent unsustainable land uses and such disasters from happening again...
