Story
South Knighton Community Events (SKCE) with the support of St Guthlacs Church are asking all residents of South Knighton and users of Holbrook Hall to help us raise funds for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to be sited outside Holbrook Hall.
Why?
Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of premature death but some lives can be saved……the quicker a casualty is treated by defibrillation the greater chance of success. Seconds count though and with the ambulance service under strain, having AEDs in every community makes complete sense. Holbrook Hall is a well-used community venue alongside a busy church and a populated area of South Knighton.
How do they work?
When a member of the public dials 999, if a community AED is within a radius of 500m, the 999 operator directs the caller to collect an AED if appropriate. AEDs are designed for use by the public and will not work on a casualty who doesn’t need it.
I’m scared to use it though!
As part of the East Midlands Ambulance Service project they offer community training in CPR and familiarisation in the use of AEDs but even without this training anyone can use an AED. The machine gives you verbal step-by-step instructions.
What funds are needed?
The funds raised will go to purchase an AED (approx £1200), its installation and the purchase of replacement and paediatric pads.
