Story

In 2014, Boko Haram raided cities of Borno, including the towns of Bama and Gwoza. Houses and farmlands were burned; and men, women, and children were massacred on their streets. The survivors became refugees.
In response, the Nigerian government provided them with a temporary settlement area in the safer city of Abuja with the option to construct temporary housing. Since 2014, several temporary structures have been constructed by NGOs and philanthropists to aid the refugees' temporary relocation including: a health center, a grinding mill and classrooms.
Currently, there are almost 600 children at the camp. This was more than initially anticipated, so the classrooms cannot accommodate them. In addition, the facilities were made to be temporary but it has been three years so the roofing of the classrooms is caving in. When it rains, students cannot go to class or have to sit under the rain during their lessons.
Despite the challenges they have faced and are still facing, the loss of family and home, displacement, and poor living conditions; there is still a desire for education. Since the inception of the learning facility, 13 students have graduated to secondary schools in the city.
As part of the National Youth Service Program, we, Oluwasindara Oyekola, Idris- Idah Kawu Musa and Olaitan Ibrahim, visited the camp and became aware of the urgent need for renovations of the classrooms. Our aim is to raise funds for refugees of the 2014 Borno, Nigeria massacre who are currently located at the temporary Bama/Gwoza IDP (Internally Displaced People) Camp in Durumi, Abuja.
After interviewing the Leaders of the camp, we understand that the under listed items are required for a better learning environment for the students;
•Benches for the children to sit on
•A better roof to prevent inflow of rain
•Learning materials ranging from notebooks to pens
•Adequate learning space, as the current space can’t accommodate the estimated 600 children of the camp
All funds raised will be directed towards the refurbishment of the current learning facility, providing necessary learning materials and building a new classroom. We strongly believe that these are necessary to create a more conducive learning environment for the kids in the Camp.
All donations are highly appreciated and will only go towards the procurement of materials needed.
