Story
G-Whizz Inclusive Tandem Bike Rides was established in memory of Graham’s best friend, Sharyn Rutterford. It offers tandem cycling experiences to a range of cyclists who are unable to ride a two-wheeled bike on their own. With standard and semi-recumbent sitting positions and independent pedalling systems, on-road rides are available to visually impaired, limited mobility and impaired balance cyclists. Rides range from a few miles to many miles, including overnight stays, depending on the ability of the rider.
Sharyn loved singing and cycling – sometimes at the same time! but when she discovered a lump at the age of 46, that made sitting on a saddle just too uncomfortable, the singing stopped. A diagnosis rapidly followed with the awful news that Sharyn had terminal cancer. Determined to ride once more, Graham came across a Circe Morpheus tandem, which features a bench seat, a semi-recumbent sitting position and an independent pedalling system which enabled them to enjoy three final rides, one of which was around Derwent Water in the Lakes.
Sharyn wasn’t best pleased that money was to be spent on something that had a very limited purpose and so Graham promised to put the bike to good future use. And so, with the untimely passing of Sharyn, just a few months from diagnosis, this club was born.
Peter has this to say about G-Whizz:
"The word 'stroke' is a good one, my stroke transformed me from an active 64 year old who rowed 3 times a week and cycled regularly, including from Lands End to John O'Groats, into someone who was paralysed down the left hand side and struggled to stand. After a lot of physiotherapy, I succeeded in walking 10 metres in 57 seconds. So struck I was! I heard about Graham from a mate and the joy of being back on two wheels was great. The endorphins released by the exercise and fresh air coursing through my body making me feel 'normal' again. The camaraderie of fellow stokers and pilots is wonderful and Graham's encyclopedic knowledge of good cafe stops is impressive. I hope that G-Whizz continues to thrive and gives others as much enjoyment as I have had."
