Why the Need for Mental Health Care In India?
• 5% of the population in India lives with a mental illness, which translates to over 50 million people. (WHO)
• According to the government's estimates about 1 in 5 people suffer from some mental illness at least once in their lifetime.
• Depression, the most prevalent form of mental illness, is estimated to exist in 3 of every 100 in urban areas like Mumbai .
• WHO statistics say the average suicide rate in India is 10 for every lakh people.
• Out of every 10 Indian professionals surveyed, 4 suffered from general anxiety disorder or depression
• In the list of the top diseases that affect corporate executives, depression (42%) ranks at the top
• The top 3 cities where professionals were the most prone to depression were Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai
• What’s more worrying is the age distribution of the respondents. Over half (55% to be precise) were under the age of 30 and a quarter were between 30 and 40 years.
