Story
Helens son Jordan is 27 years old and has a profound learning disability. There have recently been many improvements to hospital care for people with learning disabilities. Sadly this has not always been the case for Jordan who has needed frequent hospital admissions. He has experienced very negative, quite shocking experiences in the past. Jordan is unable to communicate verbally and is totally reliant on those supporting him to advocate. Jordan wasn't valued as a person. Staff didn't see Jordan, they just saw his disability.
Paula is a learning disability nurse and has spent many years supporting people with learning disabilities to access health care settings. Paula has seen first hand the impact the Paul Ridd foundation has had in lobbying and awareness raising of the needs of people with learning disabilities in both primary and secondary care settings across Wales. The Paul Ridd foundation support the learning disability liaison nurses in our local hospitals with their programmes of education of hospital staff and provide our hospitals with a means of identifying people with learning disabilities coming through their systems. Their input is invaluable to the continual improvement of care......for all vulnerable groups.
Jayne and Jonathan set up the Paul Ridd Foundation as a legacy to their brother Paul who died in hospital as a result of neglect. Now thanks to the work they are doing, changes are being made across Wales to improve hospital care for people with learning disabilities. We value the work being done by this local charity and we want to fundraise to support the work they are doing.
