Story

I have been doing some research and it seems the best way for individuals like myself to raise awareness about causes close to our own heart is to spread the word via a page such as this one. I was hoping there might be a way you can all help me achieve my goal of getting an All-Terrain wheelchair to allow me to get out and about more and help me gain back some independence.

My name is Jonathan Brough and I have been living with a spinal cord injury for the last 12 years.

Back in 2007 whilst training to be as a Ski Instructor in Canada , I contracted Meningococcal Meningitis. Although I survived such a serious illness I was left paralysed from the neck down and on a life-support machine for ever.

During my time living with Spinal Cord Injury I have been fortunate enough to receive the support from several charities in order to purchase vital equipment to adapt my life.

The life-changing support offered by donations is one of the reasons I have been fundraising for several charities that support people with spinal cord injury. I want to ensure that others who need it get the same help from these charities as I have done.

The fundraising I do would be made easier with this new all-terrain chair as I can attend more events allowing me to raise not only awareness but also more funds. If i can achieve my goal this year and purchase my new chair, the First big event I would like to compete in is the London Landmarks 1/2 Marathon in 2020.

I used to spend the majority of my time outdoors, I loved to hike, run and ski as well as many other things. Recently I have been trying to attend more 10k’s and fun runs as even though my current wheelchair limits my times, it still allows me to be out and enjoy the atmosphere and sense of achievement when completing a race.

Being out of the house benefits me massively and aids my mental wellbeing and overall quality of life. I truly enjoy participating in events such as 10K's and playing Boccia – a competitive sport I’m currently progressing it.

I cannot stress enough what a difference a more robust chair would make to my daily living as it would allow me to be more like my old self, being of an athletic mindset. Sports and outdoor activities are key to my happiness and have always been a massive part of my life.

My current chair doesn’t cope well with off road conditions, thus limiting the events and hobbies I can take part in. I’ve been in contact with a company from Telford and my Dad tested of one of their demo chairs - I believe it would open many more doors for me.

Any donation you feel you can make, no matter how small, will help me to meet this latest challenge!

The chair in question is a Frontier V6 All-Terrain wheelchair that can be used as an everyday chair but is tough enough give me the freedom I crave to explore. Where I live there is a beautiful Common, I grew up exploring and roaming with my family, This chair would enable me to be able to do so again. Giving not only me but also my family a touch of our old lives back.

As I mentioned above, any donations would be fantastic and gratefully appreciated. I thank you for your time and in advance for your generosity.

Take care,

Kind Regards.

Jonathan Brough.
