Story

Members of the Angus community - from Arbroath, Perth, Dundee and Carnoustie - are presenting this play, with special outreach to vulnerable communities and young people, including pupils of both The Arbroath Academy and Arbroath High School. War is the prime scourge of any age, but especially this one. Make Peace Not War works to show that ultimately it's not important who is right or wrong ... what is important is to stop War before it begins.

Bertolt Brecht's "Mother Courage and her children" is one of the definitive anti-war plays of our age, and will be staged from 23-30 September in Arbroath, Angus, Scotland, in St Mary's Church; by a group of accomplished actors from the whole county, and also involving some members of minority groups in the community who do not regularly go on stage. In a scenario in which there is war in Arbroath, a group of townsfolk seek shelter in the church and stage the play.

Followed after every performance by a group discussion over coffee, the ripple effect effected within all Mother Courage's audiences, not the least the pupils of the local high schools, will serve to spread meaningful awareness of the timeless evil of War and also provide Angus theatre-goers with a viewing of a major theatrical masterpiece. The last major performance in Scotland starred Glenda Jackson, in Glasgow (Citizens' Theatre) in 1990.
