Story
The Chaeli Campaign is a non-profit organization based in Cape Town, South Africa. It came to life when 5 friends joined together to raise money to fund a motorized wheelchair for one of them, Chaeli. Now 13 years old, the Chaeli Campaign focuses on inclusivity of all, regardless of background or disability. With a pre-school, outreach programs in local communities, workshops for caregivers, an adaptive sports program and more, the impact of the Chaeli Campaign can be felt throughout the community. In April 2017, I had the opportunity to hear Chaeli and her mother speak at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where I am studying for my doctorate in occupational therapy. Following many organization emails, and a very long flight, I now find myself typing this from Cape Town, where I am spending the month volunteering with the Chaeli Campaign.
The work that they do is phenomenal, quashing stereotypes and enabling individuals of all ages, and all abilities, to participate together in life. As I embark on my career as an occupational therapist, I am even more driven to support the Chaeli Campaign as it embodies the core principles of the profession: it is hope in motion...facilitating participation for all.
On Sunday, September 17, 2017, I will be running a half-marathon in Philadelphia. This is just one week ahead of the launch of the Chaeli Foundation, which will be the US branch of the Chaeli Campaign. I have been able to continue training while in Cape Town, and to take in views of Table Mountain as I run, which has been fantastic!! Please help me, in any way you can, to work towards my target, and support the Chaeli Campaign and the incredible work that they do.
