Jubilee For Climate seeks to unite groups working for climate, debt and social justice in the UK and globally; to create a set of demands that can galvanise the next wave of popular movement we need.

The Jubilee For Climate campaign grew out of the Africans Rising movement. Last November, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and following the murder of George Floyd Africans Rising sent a message to the people of the UK. We hung a giant letter from the Houses of Parliament, outlining why we need to reckon with our history and transform the present.

The Jubilee message is simple: there is no stopping or slowing the climate crisis until communities in the global south have their social, ecological and economic sovereignty restored to them. This can’t happen while many struggle under high debt burdens with high interest rates. Rich nations cannot keep chasing profit and growth which benefits a few at the cost of longevity, sustainability and sovereignty for all.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

The power to change the situation really does rest with a few nations, whose financial policies and legal institutions affect the fate of the whole world. Around 40% of global illicit financial flows comes through THE CITY OF LONDON.

90% of publicly traded loans for Sub-Saharan Africa are underwritted in UK jurisdiction which means, “if an African country cannot pay its debts, it is sued in a UK court”. At the height of the C19 pandemic, some countries were spending 10x as much on servicing their debt as they were on healthcare! The list goes on.

We need for a Jubilee For Climate.

Drawing on a history of jubilee that goes back thousands of years and on more recent debt movements and pioneers including Thomas Sankara and the Jubilee 2000 movement, Jubilee for Climate will fight for the abolition of unpayable debts and the transformation of global private finance so that investment that comes from the people serves the people and does not hold them in bondage; so that the poorest are not left paying disproportionately for crises they are least responsible for creating and least equipped to withstand.

WE HAVE THE POWER and resources to change the course we’re on. We must.

The campaign launch was entirely funded by the small group who have spent the last year fighting in court to be found innocent for raising this important issue.

We need your help to let us carry on this work. Any amount you can give is so gratefully received and goes directly to the creation of the next awareness-raising and mobilising events as well as covering essential maintenance costs (website, zoom subscriptions etc.)

Our next actions involve awareness-raising at CoP26 and beyond and creating a monthly open roundtable for individuals and organisations working in these areas to come together to create a radical campaign we can really celebrate.
