Angelo Mulvey, 54, of Harlow, has hired Blackbush Spring Common Room on Friday nights where anyone can enjoy a free meal and chance to socialise.
In just two weeks he has seen the numbers increase from one to more than 20 people and he hopes the centre, called Messengers, can help turn around lives in The Stow area.
Mr Mulvey, who is paying the expenses himself and leasing the hall from a church pastor, said: "People know me for the wrong reasons. But I am here to help.
