Story
In Feb 1967 at Upminster Junior School an organised game of football was taking place on the school field. Mid afternoon a storm moved in and the teacher told the boys to run for shelter. The fastest boy Richard White got to the pavilion first as a strong gust of wind hit the pavilion turning it on its back and crushing Richard. He sadly died of his injuries. The inquest recorded a verdict of accidental death.
His mother died the following year of grief and his father has now passed as well. His sister Jackie lives far away and is unable to tend the grave.
I never knew Richard although we probably passed each other many times. I was a year below Richard and remember distinctly the ambulance coming into the school.
I have started this project because I have often thought of this incident and I think its tragedy that his story has been forgotten and his grave is in disrepair.
I need £400 to repair the grave . If I raise more then perhaps we could put some sort of permanent memorial at the school.
If you were there or remember this incident and would like to help then please do.
I hope to invite Jackie to Upminster to witness the finished task
Thank You

6 years agoDear All. As you may have seen in the local press and on the BBC with your fantastic help we easily reached our target to restore the grave. Then last week three stonemasons offered to do the work for free. Massive thanks to J P Duncan for carrying out the work free of charge. After consultation with the Junior School we are hoping to use your money to create a memorial garden in Richards name . I will keep you all updated and again thank you
