    Story

The Glasgow Police Pipe Band ( Strathclyde Police Pipe Band 1975 - 2013) originated as The Burgh of Govan Police Pipe band in 1883 and was the first civilian pipe band ever formed. It is one of the most renowned pipe bands worldwide and has been described as a cultural icon. It continues as a force in Grade One contests but has significant financial challenges. Although maintaining other support, Police Scotland funding has vastly reduced and the band relies on personal financial contributions from our players and other fundraising activities to continue.

That's why I'm talking to you! I intend to complete the 83 mile 'Etape Caledonia' cycle event through Highland Perthshire on 21 May, along with my Sunday cycle buddie, Douglas Wheatley. We are both gentlemen of a certain age and it will be a formidable challenge for both of us! However your contributions will undoubtedly spur us on and get us over these beautiful but strength-sapping Perthshire hills.

80% of funds raised will go towards the running costs of the Glasgow Police Pipe band, but 20% will be divided equally between two inspiring youth music projects-

The Govan Schools Pipe Band Project -

Initiated by The Govan Weavers Society, it promotes Piping and Drumming in Govan, the birthplace of the Glasgow Police Pipe band, amongst young people of the area, through top class instruction and support. The commitment of the tutors who include past and present members of Glasgow Police Pipe Band, has seen the " Wee Govan Pipers" make their debut at the World Pipe Band Championships and appear on National Television.

    The Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust-

I was privileged to play with Gordon in the Vale of Atholl Pipe band from Pitlochry . He was an astonishingly skilled, ground breaking piper who we lost far too prematurely. Renowned as the 'Mozart' of modern bagpipe composition, his legacy is immense. This project promotes the development of traditional music among young people in Scotland.

Well, Hello everyone. As you can see from the picture My pal Douglas and I successfully finished the Etape Caledonia yesterday with no breakdowns ( bike or body ! ) Time was 6 hrs and 6 mins . Sub-6 hrs next year ?! I am extremely grateful and humbled by the financial support and good wishes of all my friends, family, colleagues and others. Special thanks to my Mum and Dad, Norrie and Marie, for putting us up in Pitlochry and for the 5.45 a.m porridge! The amount continues to rise and I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again everyone. Niall.

Hello all supporters past and future. First of all many thanks for your donations so far. I have sent more publicity emails today to several further organisations and hope to boost my total in the next few days. Only 13 days until the Etape Caledonia and I was out training on the bike at the weekend. Great weather. Big thanks to the Gear bikeshop in Gibson St, Glasgow for helping me out when I broke a chain link in Kelvin Way. Keep the donations coming! Thanks to all again.Cheers, Niall
