Story

Philip’s Hebridean way Challenge

In this my sixtieth year I have planned to do a big event to mark my ascent into “old age”. Last year with my wife and son we cycled the Hebridean Way - a signposted route covering all the inhabited islands in the Outer Hebrides. My challenge is to complete the entire 185 mile route in a day which has the additional test of meeting a couple of ferry sailings on time.
I thought that I should use this challenge for a meaningful cause and one which is very personal to me. In my role as a Pupil Support Worker at Knox Academy, helping to make sure that all young people have access to activities that are vital to helping in all aspects of their development, especially in the areas of confidence, resilience and self-esteem is really important. I have helped run various activities during the school activities week and at other times and I have witnessed the positive impact that this can have in helping young people by giving them experiences that grow their confidence in environments that take them outside their comfort zone and challenge them in new ways. I feel strongly that some young people not only miss out on the enjoyment of these challenges, but may also feel less connected to their school community if they are unable to take part.
I would appeal to all to donate to my challenge to help all our exceptional young people, in our community, to gain the opportunity to take part in our activities which also help build relationships between themselves, and our dedicated staff who work hard to make these activities available.
Please help us by donating to our activities week inclusion fund which supports young people to fully participate in their school community.
