Story

Hello, My names Laura I’m raising awareness about prostate cancer and hoping to raise funds for my soul mate Martin (A.K.A Johnny) who was diagnosed on Monday 14th August 2017 with stage 2 of 4 prostate cancer.

This all came about when he attended an over 50’s health check at his doctors, after having a simple blood test which shown his PSA result of 22. A normal PSA result is 4. His result was extremely high compared to what it should be, but after a urine sample it appeared he had an infection (E-coli). Mart was instructed to repeat the PSA test (Blood test) after completing the course of antibiotics, he repeated the PSA test and the result came back at 17.1 (still way above normal).

After numerous tests including, prostate biopsy, PSA Tests and a flow test we attended an appointment at Russell’s Hall Hospital at 11:10am, we were called in at 1:25pm to see the consultant. Following the prostate biopsy, there was cancer found in his prostate, this was a shock at the time as Mart shown no signs of having cancer. Not yellow in colour, no aches and pains, no loss of appetite, no tiredness NOTHING! So if you are a male and reading this PLEASE go and get yourself checked out!

So, you may ask why not have treatment on the NHS?

We were told that the NHS offer two types of treatment for prostate cancer, one being radiotherapy and the other to remove the prostate completely. Both had there for's and against. Prior to having radiotherapy they would have to carry out re-boring surgery which has the same nerve damaging risks as taking the prostate out altogether. After realising the affects from either treatments carried out, we chose to do our own research as Martin is a young 58 year old, and for those who know him, will know he loves his drumming, social life and really is a ladies man. We found out that certain types of cancer can be treated using the Nanoknife treatment. This can only be carried out privately, but has little side effects which means the treatment is less likely to have effects like incontinency, impotency, urinary tract infection. Not only this but unfortunately Mart has had three previous hernia operations, which means that there is a lot of mesh in his stomach which is likely to cause further complications for him. Nano knife treatment is so much more appealing due to martins circumstances.

After obtaining a quote of £12,450.00 from the Princess Grace Hospital for the treatment and 17,000 euros from the prostate Centre in Germany. I thought it would be a good idea to set up this page to promote and help support Mart in the months ahead as he’s not sure if the treatment will take place here in the UK or maybe Germany.

My target is to raise as much money as possible towards Martin’s treatment as every penny will be a help so let’s get behind mart and support him all the way! Thank you for reading this all donations are gratefully received.

UPDATE: (4th July 2019) Following many fundraising events and gaining support from friends, family and strangers over £6,000 has been raised for Martin and he travelled to Germany in September 2018 to receive Nano-knife treatment which cost over £22,000 (this is not including flights, accommodation or food whilst in Germany).

In February 2019 Martin returned to Germany for a 3D MRi scan which confirmed the success of the treatment. I now aim to contunie to fundraise to help recover some of the costs for the treatment and enable Martin to return to Germany for regular check ups.

My mission is to raise awareness of prostate cancer and inform others about Nano-knife treatment as the centre Martin received the treatment has a 0% incontinent rate and now a 0% impotenty rate compaired to treatment offered on the NHS this is a lot better for the patient.

Thank you to all those who have supported and contune to support Martin on his journey. If anyone is going through prostate cancer, or just wants to ask some questions please feel free to contact Martin at: nanoknifesavedmylife@gmail.com
