    Story

The British Embassy Riga believes that a small group of people can make a difference. With that in mind, we are looking forward to May 14th 2017 when some of our team and their families will be participating in the Lattelecom Riga Marathon. We want to use this occasion to bring awareness to two causes close to our hearts.

Firstly, we believe that not all of life’s important lessons are learnt in the classroom and that young people need other experiences to become committed, responsible and fulfilled citizens. So, the British Embassy Riga is proud to raise awareness for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Latvia as a perfect non-formal education platform that uses a personal challenge scheme to equip young people with such skills.

Secondly, we are committing ourselves to participate in the event to raise money for the Zvannieki Home: This charity operates an alternative family home staffed by volunteers to support children in need. The Zvannieki Team welcomes children that have been abused and removed from their families and works very hard to re-establish the feeling of home, family and security for these children.

Your donation will help on so many levels. It will encourage the team to train harder so that we can complete our challenge. When we succeed on the day of marathon, we will feel not only personal satisfaction but that together we have achieved something by both raising awareness and raising much needed donations for a good cause! Your donation will go to the Zvannieki Home to support their aim of helping children in need as they try to deal with their social, health, education, emotional and material welfare matters.

Please help us to make a difference. Be part of the Experience! DONATE!

Pancakes are favourite breakfast treat in many homes. Although pancakes don’t make the world go round, they would certainly help to cheer up the day for children at Zvannieki Home. 33 servings of pancakes would mean a special celebration at Zvannieki Home. It would need 15 eggs, 1.5 kg of flour and 3.5 litres of milk, 300 grams of sugar and some oil. Cream and jam is like the icing on the cake. £10 could turn an ordinary day into a celebration for the children of Zvannieki Home.

The team in Zvannieki Home believes that human-animal bond positively influences the mental and physical health of the children that have been removed from their families. £20 can buy a big hay-roll to feed horses Kalifornija and Bukšķe for a week. Most likely that hay roll will be shared with 3 donkeys and a lama named Jūle, who all serve the therapeutic role in the household. Darija, Kurāžs and Lotte, 3 highly valued companions (dogs), help children to develop greater empathy, self-esteem, and encourage participation in social activities.

Giving of ourselves is the most important thing we can do in our lives, and we all know that the more you give, the more benefits you will get. On May 1st, Zvannieku Home is organizing an annual Spring Cleaning at their yard and garden (https://www.zvannieki.lv/2017/04/talka-2017/#). You are more than welcome to join and give a helping hand. If your personal or professional schedule, however, does not allow you to donate your time, donating few pounds is a simple way to show you're willing to help others in any way you can.
