Story

St Peter’s Amateur Boxing Club uses boxing as a positive tool for change in our club’s community – Woolwich, Charlton, Thamesmead and Greenwich. We are based in Charlton with a gym set-up in the attic of St Thomas's Church.

We are a not-for-profit club for the whole community – training and developing people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. Our club has been in existence for over a hundred years – through using good boxing technique our coaches mentor and instil a sense of discipline, respect and positive habits - to support our boxers in overcoming life’s challenges.

We run an annual 12-week programme called ‘Guard Up for Gangs’ (funded by a grant from from Greenwich Council’s Neighbourhood Growth Fund), where we train local kids who are vulnerable and in danger of being initiated into, or are already involved in, local gangs. We use the sport we love to encourage self-reliance, a positive physical and mental attitude towards managing stress, and as a sport that offers an alternative ‘family’ and a place to hang out twice a week. ‘Guard Up For Gangs’ forms part of our club’s mission to end knife crime in our area and supports the positive mental health of all who train alongside us.

Like all clubs we have been forced to close due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our main source of income is our members’ subs. Please help us reach our target - this will ensure that we will be ready to hit the ground running once this crisis is over.

Thank you for your donations and for believing with us that we can each make a difference.

Very best wishes, Isidro, Paul, Tom, Young Tom, John, Dave and Ali.
