Story

The fight to save Stan Pennington Allotment, continues........

Thanks to 2938 people who signed the petition, those that shared their voice, partnered with the tireless efforts of the campaign team, we can now proudly share, that we have an opportunity to purchase the land and save Stan Pennington Allotments!

"This allotment has been the main factor in coping with my stroke. I knew Stan Pennington for over 30 years. He did a remarkable thing when he purchased these allotments - his sole intention was to protect them. His only wish was for these allotments to remain as allotments. He would never have allowed this land for any other use"- A member of the Stroke Association

We still need your support

Although the campaign was classified as successful, this only meant that the current owners of the land didn't remove allotment holders from the plots as of the 1st November 2023. A proposal, supported by a legal representative was submitted to the owners on behalf of Stan Pennington Allotments plot holders. It was agreed that £96,000 was needed to secure the site as an allotment and would need to be paid in full by 1st May 2024.

How do we intend to do it?

All the allotment holders are dedicated to this mission and have met on several occasions to push forward with this crowdfunding. These ideas include Quiz nights, Family fun days, Bingo nights, Plant sales, Christmas event, Easter egg hunts

This being said, there is a real call to action, for members of the surrounding and even wider community to help were they can. Could you host a cake sale? Are you a local venue that would support a subsidised cost to host a fundraising event? Are you a local business who could donate prizes to help generate much needed funds? If so, please get in touch. We will highlight your kindness and support towards saving the allotments but letting the community know of your generosity through word of mouth and social media!

If we are successful in our fundraising target, what will this mean?

The Allotments will continue to be just that. The land will not be stripped of its rich history and will continue to be a much loved and cherished community asset.

There are over 90 being occupied, hence highlighting the appetite of local people wanting to grow their own whilst reaping all the benefits of social contact, improved wellbeing, . Organisations such as North West Stroke Association, and St Helens Coalition of Disabled People will be able to maintain their community plots, which of course means individuals accessing these services will continue to develop and thrive in an inclusive, safe and friendly community whilst building on life and communication skills .

If we are unsuccessful in our fundraising target, what will this mean?

If the target is not met, then sadly we will need to vacate the land. All direct donations will be returned to the contributor. The donations we receive via this justgiving platform will unfortunately be unable to be returned, however we will hold a vote via our social media channels to allow those that contributed to have a say in which local charity / charities we forward the funds on to.

How can you help?

We appreciate any support you are able to offer.

Do you have any ideas / experiences in fundraising?

Are you a local business who could contribute materials, such as wood, that we could up-cycle and sell?
