Case study: donations in action
François, a 54 year old homeless man with severe depression, unable to speak English, is sent to us by the French Consulate. He is seen the same day by one of the Dispensaire’s psychologists and the next day by the Dispensaire’s psychiatrist. He has started supervised treament for his depression and, using contacts in the British social services, we are able to secure safe accommodation for him.
Marguerite, a 23 year old student who has recently arrived in the UK, feels unwell and is scared and confused. She comes to see one of the Dispensaire’s GPs. The doctor suspects that the patient may have HIV, a blood test is sent off that day, the result of which is positive. When she is told, Marguerite collapses ; she is alone, far away from family and friends. She spends the best part of two days at the Dispensaire, talking to the full- time members of staff, discussing her options. Finally, she decides to return home for her treatment and the Dispensaire pays for her journey.
