Why your donation matters

There are presently 20 Emmaus Communities in the UK but demand for places far exceeds current capacity, so every day people in desperate need have to be turned away. Your donation will help us to set up new Communities and expand existing ones to enable us to help more people. Every new Emmaus Community will ultimately become self-supporting because they are effective social enterprises. This means that your donation is an investment in people that will keep on yielding a return. Emmaus provides a lasting solution that restores self-esteem and enables people to rebuild their lives by addressing the fundamental reasons why they have become homeless.

Case study: donations in action

Before I became a Companion at Emmaus Sheffield I had a serious heroin addiction. I was homeless, sleeping in a tent and shoplifting to get money to feed my habit. My life had become so bad that part of me was hoping I'd get caught and sent to prison. At least there I'd be warm, fed, and most importantly, I could try to become drug free. It might sound dramatic but Emmaus has saved my life. When I was at my lowest I didn't care if I lived or died. But when I left prison and joined Emmaus it gave me something to live for. Now, I'm working on the garden maintenance team, learning new skills. I'm hoping to train in arboriculture and eventually become a tree surgeon. Life has taken a turn for the better; I have a future to look forward to. If you're homeless and prepared to work hard, then Emmaus is the place to do it. I’m grateful to everyone at Emmaus who has supported me and given me this opportunity. Emmaus has given me back my pride and self respect which means a lot to me.
