Case study: donations in action

In 2010, FOUR PAWS received the news that a hotel owner in Bulgaria was illegally keeping a young bear.

When he first came to our attention, 18-month-old Monti was living in terrible conditions in a 9x9m cell – the equivalent of a grown man living in a telephone box – next to a hotel in northern Bulgaria. It is believed he was sold to the hotel owner after being orphaned at just a few days old, and was kept for the entertainment of tourists.

Thanks to our kind supporters, Monti is now recovering well at our bear sanctuary in Bulgaria. Although Monti and our other bears haven’t learnt the skills they would need to survive in the wild, their safety is assured at our sanctuaries.

It is truly sickening to witness the legacy of the cruelty inflicted on these beautiful animals. But equally, it is incredibly moving to see how the bears thrive under the care of the FOUR PAWS team. With your help, we can work towards achieving our vision: a world without animal suffering.
