Teaching Tens and Units With Bundles of Straws
We have been working in Tanzania for over 18 years and have great experience of primary education and the difficulties within a very complex system. We have long-standing relationships with education officials at all levels. We know how long it takes to make changes and to influence national education policies. Our persistence and long-term commitment makes this Programme different from many other education projects. We have adopted a ‘sandwich’ approach. We gain first-hand experience of the difficulties in the primary schools, work with teachers to find workable solutions, and then we try to influence national policy accordingly-so putting both sides of the ‘sandwich’ together. This is proving successful. A child's life depends on a good primary education. HELP US TO SHAPE YOUNG LIVES.
Case study: donations in action
After 30 years in education in Australia my career took me to Africa; now four years and three NGOs later I am working with Village Education Project Kilimanjaro (VEPK). The other NGOs I worked for tended to ‘do things to’ the education system instead of working within the system to develop it sustainably. ‘Teachers make the difference’ and that is the focus at VEPK - training teachers in government schools. This is the reason I love working for VEPK. We also work with local education officials, which is essential too. Training teachers improves education - throwing money at computers, buildings etc. will not necessarily do so, but teachers are the key. I see teachers now really working on their teaching and adopting new methods and even adjusting those methods to their own needs, after input from VEPK. VEPK targets the essential areas in education.
