The life of an Afghan dog is not one of comfort; hunting for scraps of food, hiding from the desert sun during summer or the cold of a winter night. There is no pampered pet status in Afghanistan. Donating will enable us to assist soldiers with rescuing the animals they have adopted who come to mean so much during a stressful tour of duty. A donation will also support the ‘Nowzad’ animal rescue shelter also acting as our base to conduct our mission to improve animal welfare in Afghanistan via education for local people (especially the children) and implementing a humane trap, neuter and release program to control the stray population which in turn will prevent the spread of rabies.
Huddling for warmth against bare rock, a week old puppy alone and helpless, waits for its mum to come back. The soldier on patrol standing over the pup scans around him in every direction. There is no mum dog coming back. Nothing but the cold barren desert of this part of Afghanistan stares back at him. Without hesitation the battle weary soldier, against orders, bends down and scoops the abandoned pup up in his gloved hand. The pup has a new family now and a new name… Arnhem. When Nowzad Dogs was contacted by the soldier who has found Arnhem they were desperate to give him a ‘forever’ home in the west. Arnhem was a positive ray of light during their arduous tour of duty. The Nowzad Dogs family of supporters quickly stepped in and started fund raising to ensure that the Nowzad shelter could look after and eventually bring Arnhem home to the soldier’s family in the UK. With that support Arnhem is now a valued and loved member of that soldier’s family thanks to the Nowzad Dogs family.
