Struggling to Survive - stories of street children in East Africa

Why your donation matters

The work of the Railway Children would not be possible without the generosity of our supporters. There are many ways you can help us fight for the millions of street children around the world.

Thanks to our loyal supporters, we are now able to help more than 25,000 children every year. Those children now have a future, but many more need our help.

Donate now - your support can help us get to the street children, before the streets get to them.

Case study: donations in action

Not so long ago, Jacinta was living on the streets of Nairobi, Kenya, trapped in a life of crime, drugs and violence.

She turned to drink and drugs to blot out the daily horrors of life, and became involved with a gang – the only people who offered her any protection. Until Railway Children found her.

In East Africa, we work with gangs to get to the root of the problems, and have developed a unique approach that’s having a remarkable impact. Our outreach workers go onto the streets, getting to know street children and identifying groups to work with to form a ‘Youth Association’ – with the ultimate goal of helping them change their own lives. These groups create their own codes of conduct and choose their own leaders. It becomes their support group and a way of looking out for one another on the streets.

With our support, Jacinta’s gang formed an Association, and Jacinta’s life has transformed. She studied hard for her exams, and is now training in motor mechanics.
