Why your donation matters

How Retail Trust changes lives

The Retail Trust #highstheroes emergency fund, which raised £50,000 last year which allowed us to help some of the 11,000 riot hit retailers. The fund helped with everything from putting food on their tables and clothes on their children’s backs to paying for legal advice. In fact Retail Trust is still providing retail riot victims with access to hardship grants, free counselling, legal and debt advice, whilst 70% of claims under the Riot Damages Act have been denied or discontinued. We could not offer this support without generous donations.

Case study: donations in action

In August 2011, Chloe* and Steven’s* store was completely destroyed and looted during the London riots. The insurance assessor estimated the damage at just under £500,000 and advised that it would be at least a year before the store would be declared safe for trading. The local council assisted with a loan which went towards paying the staff wages, but did little to ease the couple’s substantial financial pressures. The couple applied to the High Street Heroes fund and received £500, with a further £2,076 awarded to assist with mortgage repayments and utilities. Chloe and Steven have a long road ahead of them, but the assistance of Retail Trust has enabled them to start the recovery process.
