Why your donation matters
For more than 20 years Stonewall has led the way in campaigning for equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Britain. Today our fight for equality is no less vital than when we started - as we push for equal marriage, we tackle the epidemic of homophobic bullying in Britain’s schools and we work to support lesbian, gay and bisexual people worldwide. We also work with over 600 employers through our Diversity Champions programme, the largest of its kind, to support Britain’s 1.8 million LGB staff. We’ve achieved a lot, but there’s still so much to do. Your donation will go a long way towards achieving our vision of a Britain where one day every lesbian, gay and bisexual person will be afforded the fair treatment and respect he or she deserves – at home, at school and at work.
Case study: donations in action
2 out of 3 lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils are bullied in Britain’s schools. 92% are verbally abused, 42% are physically bullied and 17% receive death threats. This leaves young gay people vulnerable and less likely to achieve their potential at school and beyond. Stonewall’s Youth Volunteering Programme gives young people the chance to make changes. Since 2008, our Youth Volunteers have reached over 10,000 people (including MPs, councillors, teachers and students) to challenge the harmful issues of homophobia, bullying and discrimination.
‘Every day was a battle. People would shout ‘lesbian’ or ‘dyke’ and anti-gay posters were plastered around the school. Then I was attacked by a gang on my way home…A year later I was delivering workshops on how to tackle homophobic bullying in the same school where I suffered the abuse! Stonewall’s Youth Volunteering Programme has helped me get back some confidence – and use it to make sure nobody has to go through what I did.’ Rachael, 17, Dorset.
