Thanks for visiting Nic & Steve's team fundraising page.

Nic Hanlon and Steve Cheaney have joined together to raise money for the Spinal Injuries Association. A cause that has touched both our lives.

In 1981 Steve's elder brother, Mark, was knocked from his motorcycle by a drunk driver and paralysed from the chest down, he was eighteen. He spent six months in rehabilitation at Lodge Moor Hospital in Sheffield and during his time there had fantastic support from the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) giving him the practical and emotional support he needed to recover from the trauma of his accident.

In 1996 at the Atlanta Paralympics Mark won a silver medal playing Wheelchair Basketball for Team GB and in the same year was named as one of the World's leading players, his and Steve's proudest moment. Mark is now married to Carol and a father to William aged fourteen.

On 22nd February 1973 at the age of just 38, Nic's Dad, Peter Hanlon had a horrific car accident that left him paralysed from the chest down.

After 38 years confined to a wheelchair, Peter sadly passed away on the 3rd January 2011.

The extent of his injuries were such that the list of daily triumphs over adversities were endless but what is more remarkable is that in all those years his view was - "Get on with it".

A chance meeting in 1974 with Baroness Masham of Ilton - Founder and President of the SIA, and Peter became one of its founder members. A Charitable Association with whom he remained a supporter and member all his life. The work SIA does for those with Spinal Injuries is immense. This is 'life rebuilding' stuff from all aspects - not just dealing with the physical disability. These are trauma injuries at their extreme.

Our challenge is to cycle the West to East Coast of England - the Coast to Coast (Whitehaven in The West to Robin Hood's Bay in The East) 160 miles, through the Lake District, across The Pennines and through the West Ridings of Yorkshire, in just three days.

We hope our challenge and the work of the SIA, inspires you to support us in our cycling challenge.
