Lands End to John O'Groats
1000 miles
11 days
The good news is we made it.
We got to the finish at John O'Groats as planned on day 11, approx 2 pm, Tues, 13/09/11.
The final damage was; 1010 miles, 11 days, approx 90 hours in the saddle, 4 punctures, 1 broken spoke (fixed semi - permanently at the road side in 45 minutes), 2 sets of brake blocks, 3 ferry crossings - The Mersey crossing & onto then off Arran, countless bottles of a well known branded sports drink, flap jacks, chocolate, breakfast bars & bannanas, 4 very tired legs, 2 very tender behinds.
The hardest thing to cope with was probably the lack of sleep early on when we were doing the 100 mile days, as we were finishing around or after night fall & up again at 5 - 5.30 am.
It rained virtually every day with the last 5 - 6 days being pretty wet & cold throughout, although retaining our sense of humours & keeping our general camaraderie fairly high has made it an enjoyable experience.
We think the hardest thing about readjusting to normal life will be dropping back down to a normal calorie intake as we were eating huge daily amounts of food. On day 7 we both commented that we did not want to see another breakfast bar again!
So far we've only raised £500 - £600 to be split evenly between the two charities, although I'm hoping this will increase over the next few weeks.
Speak soon,
Pete.

On 03/09/11 Pete Boddy & deranged cycling companion Richard Reeve will be attempting a 1000 mile, 11 day route from Lands End to John O'Groats.
With an average daily mileage of 91 miles, carrying their own gear with no back up or support they are seriously wondering if they've bitten off more than they can chew.
They're funding the trip themselves, but hoping to raise money for a couple of charities along the way.
The charities are; Nottingham Mencap & TESS.
Nottingham Mencap support people with learning disabilities & difficulties in the Nottingham area.
TESS is the Teso Educational Support Scheme which helps vulnerable children (mainly orphans) with education in the TESO area of Uganda, North Eastern Africa.
If you'd like to find out more info about the charities click on the below links to their sites (again from your own computer)
Nottinham Mencap web site: www.nottinghammencap.org.uk
TESS website: http://www.tess.uk.net/
Thanks for taking the time to read this & spare a thought for their weary legs.
Please feel free to forward this link onto anyone we've forgotten.
All the best,
Pete & Rich
