Le Grand Départ Challenge is my Solo Cycle Ride from my home in Messingham, N. Lincs to Silsden, W. Yorkshire, and back again... A total of 180 Miles.
Stage 1 of the Ride will take place on Friday 4th July 2014 - that's 90 miles from Messingham to Silsden...
Stage 2 of the Ride will take place on Monday 7th July 2014 - that's another 90 miles in the opposite direction...
I will be Cycling the Journey in a Complete Circuit & therein lies the biggest part of Le Grand Départ Challenge:
Once I leave the relative "flat-lands" of Lincolnshire (on the morning of Friday 4th); every road, each pot-hole and all of the climbs that I will encounter en-route will be completely unchartered territory for me - until I get back to Lincolnshire on the afternoon of Monday 7th July!
I have 'nicknamed' this "Le Grand Départ Challenge 2014" as on Saturday 5th and Saturday 6th July I will be taking the opportunity to savour the atmosphere of the first ever "Grand Départ" (the Start of The Tour De France) to take place in England... Both Stage 1 and Stage 2 pass through, and close to Silsden, - so I am hopeful of catching several glimpses of Team Sky as they power through Yorkshire in their early defence of Chris Froomes’ 2013 Tour Crown!!
This challenge is in memory of my Father-in-Law Mick Parsons and my Friend Trevor Hannan; who both lost their respective battles with “The Big C” over the last 12 months
This (the first of a couple of fundraising challenges that I shall attempt this year) seems like the least I can do, to raise money for both:
· Cancer Research UK, as they continue their ground-breaking work with the aim of "Beating Cancer Soon";
· and Marie Curie Cancer Care who’s dedicated Cancer Care Nurses provide terminally ill patients with care and support in their own homes.
As you will see I have created two Fundraising Pages; The First for Cancer Research UK and The Second for Marie Curie...
