Hello,
This forthcoming March (on the 10th day) many students from the Nottingham Vet School are taking on the 3 Peaks Challenge. Our team – the magnificent Team Stink - is raising money for the Veterinary Benevolent Fund: a fantastic organisation supporting veterinary professionals and their families who are facing issues such as depression, anxiety and mental health trouble, employment problems, bankruptcy and debt. Such issues are unfortunately common throughout this demanding and frequently stressful career, and the charity provides support to us, our friends and our colleagues when problems arise. For information on their invaluable work, please see http://www.vetlife.org.uk/.
In this stupendous challenge we are embarking upon, not only must we climb the highest mountains in each of Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) within 24 hours, but the summit of Ben Nevis alone is expected to be beneath one metre of snow. The greatest concern with this is not the extra metre we must climb, and the photo for this page shows the conditions met by two of this team's members on Snowdon in December 2011. During the night, this could be especially difficult.
Our lives are structured within the parameters of exam preparation, exams themselves, placements throughout our holidays and key dates in the summer must always be reserved for the ever-feared potential exam re-sits, making this the most practical date for this event. Setting out to accomplish such a feat in March presents many further challenges: reduced daylight and even less likeliness of decent weather being just two added problems in our way. However, we endeavour to do everything necessary to succeed.
The challenge of course requires considerable preparation, training and investment in equipment, so any donation to our charity of choice would be immensely appreciated, making our efforts evermore worthwhile. Not only do we want to demonstrate the integrity of young veterinary professionals and the extent to which we shall go to uphold the good work of our profession, but we shall do so in style, setting an example of the courage and hard work we live by.
We would also like to promote the fantastic work of the Mountain Rescue, and although we hope not to have to rely on them during out expedition, we are forever grateful for their work and shall perpetually encourage their support.
Since you are already on our JustGiving page, you can donate very easily. During the following months each member of our team will be following a strict preparation regime, and any donations will be ever-more encouraging to us. So we urge you, please dig deep and for our charity the cost of a drink or two...
We thank you in advance for your generosity,
Team Stink.
Matt Bridge, Matt Darby, Harry Hamlin-Wright, Olly Heygate, Reuben Newsome and Leo West.
