Why your donation matters

The Food Bank provides emergency food parcels to local families who hit a short term crisis. Many of those needing to use our services are single mums or families where one parent has lost their job and have no savings to fall back on. Our referral agencies qualify the family’s particular needs and issue a Food Bank voucher as part of the overall care plan for the family, moving them from crisis to sustainability.

5293 food parcels were given out in 2010 and this figure will rise in 2011!

Your donation will ensure that we can continue to respond to this need in an immediate, practical way and to fund the much needed expansion, enabling us to reach families who otherwise would go hungry.

Case study: donations in action

Sarah was a young single mum with three children under the age of 5, she was also supporting her 16-year-old sister who was expecting her first child. Sarah had no parental support. Sarah got into debt and found her home in jeopardy. Bailiffs were demanding £44 per week for a 6-week period which Sarah could not afford to pay as well as feeding her family. The Food Bank was contacted by the local SureStart Centre who asked us to support Sarah and her family for the 6-week period so as to enable Sarah to pay her debt and keep her home. The Food Bank was happy to help in this situation and supported Sarah until her debt was paid enabling her to again become self sufficient.
