The charity plays an essential role in our community by providing a much-needed addition and alternative to the current social housing provision, permanent accommodation to those on very low income thus sheltering the elderly in financial need who cannot afford commercial rents and are unable to secure council housing. Fryers’ Callis on Kettering road is part of the Stamford Municipal Almshouse Charities and was built circa 1832 from a bequest in the will of Henry Fryer, a surgeon of Stamford, to provide subsidised accommodation for deserving men and women of Stamford. It was last refurbished in the 1960s and needs to be brought in line with current housing requirements. The charity, which has only limited funds due to its remit to provide subsidised housing, has been upgrading its housing stock over the last five years but is no longer able to proceed with this last ambitious project without the support of the community.
