Caleb Lovejoy, a wealthy merchant, founded this special Charity by his will of 1676 in which he stipulated that four Almshouses should be built in the parish of St Nicolas as accommodation for 'four persons of good character'. The beautiful Grade II listed cottages provide four comfortable homes to this day for older or vulnerable members of the local community.
