We're bringing back the beloved Walk the Walk challenge with this year's theme: Hike the San Gabriel Mountains.

Moving regularly and being in nature can be healing during stressful times, so dust off your shoes and get ready for some friendly competition to help all of us move forward and move more.

Did you know that the San Gabriel Mountains offers 557 miles of hiking trails? Some are so close that if you live in Northeast Los Angeles, you can find a hike within 20 minutes. In 2014, parts of the San Gabriel Mountains were declared a National Monument by President Obama, protecting this precious natural resource for years to come. Each week of June, we will be highlighting a local trail and taking you in and around the San Gabriel Mountains with pictures, fun facts, and their corresponding miles, as well as step count. So keep an eye on our social media and check out the APIFM blog for which hike we will be virtually visiting each week!

Tracking Fitness Activity Miles

We are excited to offer JustGiving as a platform for our steppers to come together as a community for this challenge and to fundraise. JustGiving only accepts miles and kilometers when you add your fitness activity to your individual JustGiving fundraising page. So all participants should track their activities by miles only and APIFM will convert these into steps in the end using this formula 1 mile = 2,000 steps.

Read on to find out how to sign up for the Individual or Team challenge.

Individual division rules:

Aim to walk 10 miles/20,000 steps or more every week for the month of June.

On your individual JustGiving fundraising page, you can tell your personal story, post pictures and thoughts from your walks, comment on other pages and encourage your friends and family to support your walks by donating.

While you are moving, track your miles from any fitness tracker or app. Then you can add your Fitness Activity by miles manually on your individual JustGiving fundraising page. Be sure to post your miles on your individual JustGiving fundraising page every time you walk, run, or roll so that your page will show your total miles logged for the week. Make sure that your page is updated with your miles by midnight on Sunday of each week in June. You can only track your activity by miles on JustGiving, so we will take your total miles and convert them to a steps equivalent for this challenge.

You can also add your fitness activity miles by connecting your page with the Strava app! Check the FAQS on the registration page for directions on using Strava.

There is a $25 entry fee for this challenge ($15 for students).

Team division rules:

Form a team of at least 5 individuals from your nonprofit/government/foundation/etc. (staff, interns, volunteers, board members). Each team member should aim to walk 10 miles/20,000 steps or more every week for the month of June. Consider picking a Team Captain to get you registered, create your team page, and then invite others to create their individual JustGiving fundraising pages and connect them to the team. Please submit your roster of team members and their emails with the associated team name to info@apifm.org no later than June 4, 2021 - any changes to the roster can be made up until then.

Once you create your individual JustGiving fundraising page, you can link it to your team page, tell your personal story, post pictures and thoughts from your walks, comment on other pages and encourage your friends and family to support your walks by donating.

Each team members page will show the total number of miles they have logged. Team Captains - help make sure that every team member's page is updated with their miles by midnight on Sunday of each week in June. You can only track your activity by miles on JustGiving, so we will take your total miles and convert them to a steps equivalent for this challenge.

You can also add your fitness activity miles by connecting your Individual JustGiving fundraising page with the Strava app and even create a Strava Group if you'd like! Check the FAQS on the registration page for directions on using Strava and creating/joining a team after creating your JustGiving fundraising page.

Team Average - APIFM will take your total miles for your team and convert them to a weekly steps average equivalent to determine which team has walked the most miles/steps every week. We will update everyone each new week on which team has the highest average to spark a little competition.

There is a $125 entry fee for this challenge.

Prize opportunities:

This year APIFM has a campaign goal to raise $10,000 in June to support our work feeding our API communities and advocating for their environmental health. With an encouraged (but not required) minimum fundraising goal of $100, team members and individual steppers who fundraise will have the chance to enter our opportunity drawings and receive special prizes, plus additional bragging rights.

If you fundraise any amount through the JustGiving platform, you will be entered into an opportunity drawing to win Prize #1.

If you raise 2x the minimum fundraising goal, then you will be placed in an opportunity drawing for Prize #2.

If you raise 3x the minimum fundraising goal, then you will be placed in an opportunity drawing for Prize #3.

This is the Walk the Walk challenge after all, so the individual with the most miles/steps overall will be the winner of Prize #4.

The first place team with the highest average step count overall in the end will win the grand prize of the GOLDEN WOK TROPHY, which will stay with the team for an entire year until the next Walk the Walk challenge! Inclusive Action for the City (formerly LURN) was our 2019 winner.

Good luck, remember your face covering, and have fun!
