While we are all weathering the COVID-19 storm together, the effects are intensified for those in our community who were already on shaky ground before the pandemic because of low wages, no health coverage, or health challenges.

Illinoisans who earn little or no incomes and live with chronic illnesses are incredibly susceptible to COVID-19. For those who are able to work, often they work in low-wage jobs that can't be done remotely, and don't offer paid sick days.

When the CDC tells the American people to regularly wash their hands, self-quarantine at home, and avoid crowded places, we think of our client Tami. Tami and her child, like many people who are homeless, don't have regular access to hand-washing stations, and sleep in over-crowded, cramped shelters.

Tami and her child now have comprehensive, quality health coverage thanks to Legal Council's advocacy, but there are many Illinoisans who don't have coverage. Without insurance, these individuals and their families are more likely to avoid going to the doctor or ER in fear of outrageous medical bills.

Even though we're in these uncertain times, there's still so much you can do to make sure all of our communities have what they need to be well. This is the time to live up to the ideal of health justice.
