In my 31 years at Hillside, I've worked closely with young children and their families as they cope with challenges that no one should have to face, at any age.

Their life situations are unique, but the children have certain things in common such as the incredible joy that lights up their faces when they receive a toy or gift, particularly at this time of year.

The fact is, for many of the kids we serve whether they're in a residential campus program or a community-based service holiday gifts are a rarity. Like many of the simple pleasures many of us may take for granted, a colorfully wrapped present can be a luxury that's heartbreakingly out of reach.

Each year for almost four decades, Special Santa has put toys and gifts into the hands of vulnerable children and families served by Hillside. Last year alone, nearly 4,000 kids received over 6,500 presents through this amazing effort.

I've been privileged to see the impact of this program up close. For years, the residential campus where I work was Special Santa's regional headquarters, so I was able to connect with volunteers and donors as they brought shopping bags filled with gifts. Their support for this program was truly inspiring and the inspiration only grew when I saw the reactions of youth who received those gifts later in the season.

That same magic takes place every year for kids in Hillside programs throughout New York State and Maryland. Many of the wonderful young people we serve will not receive presents this year without this above-and-beyond act of kindness.
