Why help kids like Joel?

Like many children, Joel always dreamed of playing baseball and learning karate, two activities that required strong legs and upper body strength. Due to his spina-bifida diagnosis Joel had neither, but he wasn't going to let that stop him.

We tried to learn as much as we could about spina bifida so that we, as his parents, could be the best advocate for him. We knew Joels future depended upon access to care and his willingness and strength to make things happen." -Wendy, Joel's mom.

The name Joel means strong willed and indeed he is! In addition to having spina bifida, he has hydrocephalus, neuromuscular scoliosis, and chiari malformation. Ten surgeries later, he is more determined than ever to achieve his goals.

His dreams revolve around one of his favorite sports, baseball. Currently, he is working towards walking the distance around the bases without stopping and strengthening his core muscles by pitching and catching the ball. As Joel continues to grow, it is getting harder for his muscles to support his weight when walking, and although he relies on his wheelchair to get around, he isn't giving up.

The therapy team at Siskin Children's Institute, worked tirelessly with Joel and his mom to develop the plan to fulfill his dream. Oftentimes, Joel's therapy sessions included practicing his skills in the hallways, trying out a new stander or walker, or engaging the staff to pitch ball with him.

Strong determination and the will to succeed, were keys in Joel being where he is today. The therapists at of Siskin Children's Institute, designed and implemented a treatment plan and together Joel became a strong young man fulfilling his dream of playing baseball.
