Story
Youth homelessness has reached a crisis point. Each year, between 1,200 and 1,400 young people experience homelessness in Ottawa alone—with many more at risk across our region.
No young person chooses homelessness. For many it begins with circumstances beyond their control—family conflict, abuse, or unsafe environments.
Yet, youth who experience housing instability are sometimes invisible. They may still show up for school or work, but when the day ends, they have no idea where they will sleep. Once a young person loses their home, everything becomes harder: staying healthy, succeeding in school or work, and imagining a future. Without stability, they can quickly lose their footing.
Across our region communities are coming together around a shared goal: stop youth homelessness before it starts.
United Way East Ontario plays a critical role by bringing partners together, leveraging research, and investing in prevention-focused programs that work at a systemic level. We know it will take more than one agency, program, or initiative to create change. Together, we will ensure fewer young people reach a crisis point, and together, we can end youth homelessness for good.
When we give to help end youth homelessness, we provide at-risk youth with:
- Support to build a stable life with mental health counselling, school, and job skills
- Help building positive connections with family, friends, and a community they can count on
- Basic needs such as affordable housing and food
When we act early, we can change the trajectory of their lives.
