Story
According to a 2020 United Nations study, 2 billion people worldwide live without safely managed drinking water. The human impact behind this statistic is alarming: communities without access to safe water have higher rates of disease, less access to education, and fewer economic opportunities. The result is a cycle of poverty that’s almost impossible to break… until a sustainable supply of safe water becomes available. And that’s the real purpose behind the Walk for Water.
About the Project
The water project in Burkina Faso includes two boreholes, which will provide clean and safe drinking water, and a block of five public latrines. When complete, 4000 households, and the entire community of Kona, will be forever changed.
“It’s heartbreaking that not everyone in the world has the ability to just get a glass of water that’s clean and refreshing.” -Sidonia, Walk for Water participant
Why Burkina Faso?
It’s one of the poorest countries in the world, with minimal infrastructure and 74% of the population living in rural areas that experience severe drought and a lack of safe water for their daily needs. Every day, women and girls walk long distances to fetch dirty water, which leads to high rates of malnutrition and disease. This project will contribute to improved health, a stronger local economy, and more opportunities for education.
About the Walk for Water
The first Walk for Water took place in June 2023 as a partnership between International Needs Canada and Women Making a Difference, located in southwestern Ontario. The first walk raised more than $19,000 for the $35,000 Burkina Faso project. Bonavista Church is hosting the second walk in Calgary on July 23rd. The goals for the day are to:
- Raise at least $10,000 for the water project in Kona, Burkina Faso
- Create an opportunity for fellowship among the church members
- Walk through the neighbourhood where they worship each week
- Show hospitality by hosting a free community BBQ
"The women and girls walk at least 5km to get water, which isn’t even clean - it’s filthy!" -Janet, Walk for Water participant
